Why I Love Winter

I’ve been asked a number of times, especially after the most recent storms, why I like winter.  Walking in this morning as the sun shown off the snow, I was again reminded of just how beautiful I find the world after fresh snowfall. I love the calmness of the winter snow.  If we let it, the weather slows us down (I loved the News Gazette headline “Today Cancelled”).  Young people know it’s a time to go out and play — but if we remember us adults can do the same!

But I also learned in school that the wonder of the snow is how it captures the water in a way that keeps it running off of the hard, frozen ground in winter and preserves it for the spring, when it’s needed for the new growth to come.  So I also appreciate winter as I anticipate the first flowers that are waiting to burst forth soon!
