I believe what makes the U.S. government at all trustworthy is 1) a system of checks and balances; and 2) an informed and engaged electorate. Combined these help to limit the power of any one politician or branch of government.
Businesses, especially large corporations and multinationals, have considerable impact on our lives. However they are not in existence to represent our interests but to make a profit. I am not opposed to capitalism. But I believe government regulations are a critical check and balance that is just as important to assure the power of a few business leaders do not overcome the best interests of the many as checks and balances are important for control of government power.
